Limited Alternative Detection Methods
Traditional methods, such as blood culture, are not portable, require 2-7 days to provide a diagnosis, and are unable to culture non-bacterial infections. These limitations contribute to the misuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics, further driving antimicrobial resistance.
Blood cultures detect pathogens in fewer than 30% of cases, resulting in a high rate of missed infections. Additionally, they suffer from a false positive rate ranging between 20% and 60%, compromising diagnostic accuracy.
Existing alternatives to blood cultures for pathogen detection are often slow, lack specificity, and typically provide only a general indication of the likelihood of infection rather than identifying the exact pathogen.
